K Talk Subtitles — Privacy Policy

K Talk Subtitles ("the extension") is a browser extension provided by K Talk to help enrolled students learn Korean while watching YouTube. This policy explains what data the extension handles and why.

What the extension accesses

• Your K Talk login — the extension reads your k-talk-token authentication cookie from ktalk.live to confirm you are an active K Talk student/teacher. The token is sent only to K Talk's own API (api.ktalk.live) to authorize requests. It is never sent anywhere else.
• The YouTube video you are watching — when you play a video, the extension sends that video's ID, the Korean words you hover, and the current subtitle line to K Talk's API so it can return subtitles, translations, romanization, and word meanings.
• Your settings — preferences (translation language, auto-pause, etc.) are stored locally in your browser via chrome.storage and are not transmitted.
• Community posts (only when you choose to post) — if you click "Ask K Talk", the extension captures a screenshot of the current YouTube player (the video frame plus the on-screen subtitle), and sends it together with your note, the video link, and the subtitle text to K Talk's API to create a post in the K Talk Community. These posts are visible to other K Talk members. The screenshot is taken only on that explicit action — never in the background.

What we do NOT do

• We do not sell or share your data with third parties for advertising.
• We do not track your browsing history outside of the YouTube video you actively use the extension on.
• We do not collect names, emails, or payment details through the extension (authentication is handled by your existing K Talk account).

Third-party processing

To produce subtitles and meanings, K Talk's API uses: YouTube (for caption tracks), Google Translate (to translate subtitle lines), and a language-model provider (for word meanings and alignment). For videos that have no caption track, the video's audio is transcribed by K Talk's own self-hosted speech-to-text service to generate subtitles; the audio is processed transiently and is not stored. Only the minimum text needed (subtitle lines and hovered words) is sent for processing. Results are cached by K Talk to reduce repeat processing.

Data retention

Subtitles, translations, and word meanings are cached on K Talk servers keyed by video and word so they can be reused. This contains public YouTube content and dictionary data, not personal information.
